Shamone! The King of Pop Michael Jackson reclaimed his crown from friend Elizabeth Taylor as Forbes magazine’s top-earning deceased celebrity. According to Forbes, between October 2012 and October 2013 Jackson’s estate earned over $160 million. Clearly the spirit of MJ will never die!
A large chunk of that change comes from not one but two Cirque du Soleil shows that license his music (Immortal, which tours around the world and One, which is housed at the Mandalay Bay hotel in Las Vegas and features an MJ hologram) as well as Jackson’s expansive music catalog which includes his own works as well as songs from other several artists including the Beatles (much to Paul McCartney’s chagrin).
Coming in at number two is another King (and personal favorite of mine!), Elvis Presley. Presley’s estate earned $55 million last year. Not bad for someone who died on a toilet!
Other musicians on the list include reggae legend Bob Marley, McCartney’s partner in crime John Lennon, and list newcomer Jenni Rivera, who sadly passed away in a plane crash last December.
As sad as it is that these incredible artists are no longer with us, it’s wonderful that their legacies continue to live on!
